Saving Succulents
April 24, 2017
For the past few months, my succulents were constantly growing but with weird holes on its leaves. Thinking of it as a disease or maybe an invasion of bugs were the cause of this phenomena, I still couldn't get a clear answer even after numerous google searches with various keywords. The photos in gardening blogs just didn't match up with the holes of my own plants. I resorted to a conclusion that there are worms/bugs that come out at night to nibble off my plants and to dig hole on the leaves.
Baby cactus uprooted :( |
Along with this mysterious situation was the amount of sand on the clothes that were hanged to dry right beside this pot. The sand on these clean clothing were definitely not blown by the wind from the pot as it was a huge lump of sand instead of a slight grainy texture. Not only that, the soil in the pot were always having contour like the Sahara desert and no way the wind could have made it happen. Another amazing thing was some of my succulents were constantly uprooted and I had to replant them almost every week!
I think I found my prime suspects. Pigeons.
The culprits. |
I believe they've been pecking for worms (which I did not know that my soil had it because when transferring to the pot I didn't notice any) which explains the irregular surface of the soil, holes on leaves and also uprooted plants. Also, my mother saw them nearby the pot a few times but flew off when they saw my mum peeking from the window! Sneaky birds!
So to save these helpless plants, I had them fenced with some plastic fencing which I hope won't get carried away by the wind too soon!
But first, I had to replant the uprooted plants that were going all sideways or worst, up on the ground.
Not only did I replant the succulents, I added more soil to the entire secure the positions of the succulents, especially the baby cactus which were entirely uprooted. Pour in a good cup of water to make the soil compact!
Remember to measure and do a mock set up first before cutting and assembling your fence. I used some leftover plastic netting to do the trick and tadaaaa!
If there is a major improvement on the plants after this, I will know that it was the fault of the pigeons but if the well being of the succulents continue to deteriorate, I really don't know what I should do.
Hopefully the pigeon doesn't get too desperate to fly into the pot. If it does, damn I need to build a cover then! 😩
