Re-pot and Replanting Succulents for Beginners
January 30, 2017
A few weeks after my trip back from Cameron Highlands, these succulents I bought grew too fast and I had no choice but to re-pot and replant it from it's cute little pots into a bigger pot. Under the guidance of Madam Yap, I had a successful mini Sunday project. If you are new to gardening, read on to know more about what you need and how to re-pot and replant your babies 🌼
1. What You Need 🌱
There isn't much special tools you need for the re-potting and replanting activity because it's not a tree that you are focusing on. For beginners like me, here are some of the must-have items:
- 1 3kg Black soil [Easily available at Tesco and anywhere for a price of about RM7.00 per packet]
- 1 big pot [Planning to re-pot and replant all six succulents into one big pot]
- 3-5 pebbles/1 netting [Pick one and these are to prevent the water and soil to flow out easily]
- 1 trowel
- 1 pair of gloves
- 1 pail of water [This depends on the pot that you are replanting to, the bigger the pot, the more water needed]
- A lot of newspapers [Lay this on your working area which will ease cleaning up later]
2. Maximize Your Soil 🌱
The reason for having pebbles or a netting to cover the pot holes is because you won't want to have a lot of your soil flushed out when you water in the future. Because I did not have pebbles, I resorted to this netting pocket which was supposed to function as a protective bag for bras when washed in washing machines. I cut one half away (for future planting projects) and used the other half as substitute for the pebbles. If you are ever using this netting pocket, make sure you cut the zippers away!
3. Fill In The Soil 🌱
Fill as much soil as you can into the pot because trust me, soil is never enough because after watering, the loose soil will become compact, making it lesser than it looks. Dig some holes with the trowel so that the water that you will be filling in later will be equally distributed throughout.
4. First Water Fill 🌱
If you've noticed, I shifted the pot to the spot where I wanted it to be before pouring in the first bucket of water because I was initially doing everything on the floor and I definitely did not want to wet the newspapers and the floor. So unless you are doing this outdoors, remember to shift the pot outside or to its designated place before pouring the water.
After filling it with water, use a trowel to mix the soil and water to make sure that the soil is fully hydrated. Feel free to add more water if the soil still looks dry.
5. Re-pot and Replant Succulents 🌱
Dig holes with depth of at least 3 inches and in goes the plant! Pop it out carefully from it's mini pot and place it at wherever you want it to be. If you are planning to plant a few succulents in one pot, don't mind the uneven contour of the soil until you have finish replanting all into their new home.
Once all the succulents are in, pour the last round of water and adjust the uneven and messy soil carefully with your hands (with gloves on of course because the trowel was too big to fit in the confined space between succulent to succulent).
And voila! You've done the very basics of a budding gardener for re-potting and replanting succulents. One tip is that once you notice that the leaves of your plant are way over the pot that it is in, it means it is time to shift them to a larger space. But do be careful when transferring them because some of these plants have delicate roots which might break during the re-potting and replanting process.
Done! All of these in just under 30 minutes, fast and fun! |
